Get Memphis Broadway Tickets And Experience The Birth Of American Music
The musical play Memphis is storming Broadway after several sold out runs in Seattle (Washington), San Diego (California), Mountain View (California) and its premier in 2003 at North Shore Music Theatre, Beverly, Massachusetts.
The Broadway version has the original lead pair, Chad Kimball playing Huey Calhoun, the protagonist, and Montego Glover playing Felicia Farrell, a black American singer who is Calhoun's love interest. The show, which boasts of some great musical numbers courtesy David Bryan and Joe DiPietro, is an all out family entertainer set in the musical and social background of the 1950s.
Huey is a disc jockey by profession in Memphis, Tennessee. He has a passion for African American music. Through his radio station, he familiarizes a whole new set of white audience to the world of black music and becomes an unlikely hero in the process. The birth of rock n roll, gospel, rhythm and blues, not to mention Bryan's own contemporary style lend a magical quality to the original score of the music, which is the main attraction of the show. It was awarded the Craig Noel Award for Excellence in Theatre (San Diego) for both Outstanding Musical of 2008 and for Kimball's performance as DJ Calhoun.
The other actors in the Broadway production of Memphis include Derrick Basin as Gator, J. Bernard Calloway as Delray Jones, James Monroe Iglehart as Bobby, Michael McGrath as Mr. Simmons and Cass Morgann as Gladys Calhoun. It is directed by Christopher Ashley, known for his work in 'Xanadu', 'All Shook Up', 'The Rocky Horror Show' (Tony Award nominated), 'Sweeny And Todd', and 'Merrily We Roll Along', amongst many other milestone productions.
Sergio Trujillo (of 'Jersey Boys' fame) is the choreographer, while David Gallo ('Xanadu', 'A Catered Affair', 'Gem of the Ocean') is the scenic designer. Costume Designer Paul Tazewell, best known for Broadway productions such as 'Guys n Dolls' and Tony Awards nominated 'In the Heights' has designed the costume for Memphis. The lighting designer for the show is Howell Binkley, whose Broadway works include 'West Side Story', 'Guys and Dolls' and Tony Awards nominated 'In the Heights'.
